In 1969, Bob DuCharme started R.S. DuCharme and Company-Wood Stairs and Railings. The business was located in the garage of his home. Designed Stairs, one of the largest stair manufacturers in the Midwest, was incorporated in 1981. The name was chosen to reflect the fact that the company redesigned stairs. The company employs more than 170 people and occupies nearly 140,000 square feet. The company has designed and built more than 100,000 stair projects during a 35-year span. Designed Stairs maintains its headquarters in Sandwich, Ill.
