Founded by inventor William S. Weir in the 1860s, the Weir Plow Company became Monmouth's leading industry, notably producing cultivators and expanding its product line to include plows, harrows, and cotton planters. At its peak, the company employed 300 workers and manufactured 10,000 cultivators annually, shipping them extensively throughout the Southwest and into Mexico.

Following his success in manufacturing, Weir ventured into banking and established several financial institutions, while also making advancements in pottery with the founding of the Weir Pottery Company.
