The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is an independent agency that regulates commodity futures and option markets in the United States. The agency assures the economic utility of futures markets by protecting market participants against fraud, manipulation and abusive trading practices and by ensures the financial integrity of the clearing process. It maintains offices in Illinois, Kansas and New York. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission operates an Enforcement division that investigates and prosecutes alleged violations of the Commodity Exchange Act. The agency also maintains a market oversight division that is responsible for fostering markets that accurately reflect the forces of supply and demand for underlying commodity.
