Coiled Serpent Mound
Coiled Serpent Mound is an earthwork installation located along the western banks of the Chicago River in Horner Park, serving as a tribute to the ancestral practice of mound building and highlighting the cultural history of placemaking. Created with the collaboration of various community partners, including artist X and landscape architect Nilay Mistry, the mound aims to foster a deeper connection between the public and the river, emphasizing its significance to Chicago's development.
In addition to Coiled Serpent Mound, the project includes a complementary earthwork called Serpent Twin, located by the Des Plaines River, which together form anchors for a conceptual outdoor museum trail. The initiative promotes the use of natural materials, indigenous plant species, and restored habitats, while also providing visitors with access to a virtual layer of historical and current information through their smartphones.
