Chicago Aikikai, founded in 1963 as the Illinois Aikido Club, is the first dojo in the Midwest dedicated to the Japanese martial art of aikido. Under the guidance of chief instructor Marsha Turner Sensei, the dojo fosters an inclusive community that emphasizes personal growth, mental and emotional self-control, and effective self-defense through the exploration of harmony and balance.
Aikido, defined as the way of harmonizing with energy, focuses on redirecting the energy of an attack rather than competing against it. As a member dojo of the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba, Chicago Aikikai supports a global network of dojos dedicated to the principles of nonviolent conflict resolution rooted in traditional samurai disciplines.
