The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site in Springfield, IL is a restored law office that was once used by Abraham Lincoln during his 25-year law career. Located on the south side of the square facing the Old State Capitol, this Greek Revival building was built in 1840-41 and is the only building that still stands from Lincoln's time. The office space was rented on the third floor, above the federal courtroom, and was used for preparing cases for federal courts, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the state's Eighth Judicial Circuit. During his time in this office, Lincoln read newspapers aloud, had a haphazard approach to office organization, and kept a bundle of papers on the desk for general information. Lincoln and his law partner, William H. Herndon, moved to another building in 1852 but their partnership was not officially dissolved until Lincoln's death in 1865.
