The McHenry Police Department maintains a citizens police academy that provides training programs related to criminal laws, firearms instruction, defensive tactics, first aid, patrol procedures and investigations. The department supports the Explorer Program, which is a worksite-based program for youths between the ages of 14 and 20. The McHenry Police Department has a K-9 unit that performs duties related to missing persons, arrest of dangerous subjects, and drug, building and article searches.
