Dr. O'Brien completed her undergraduate degree at Illinois State University in Bloomington, Illinois. She completed both her medical degree and residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She first served in the military for three years before continuing her education, eventually choosing infectious disease as a specialty.
