Boise Bomb Shelter
The Boise Bomb Shelter, constructed in 1961 and originally known as the Highlands Community Fallout Shelter, is the first prototype community fallout shelter in the United States. Designed by architect Edgar B. Jensen, the underground facility spans 14,000 square feet and was initially intended to serve as a center for recreation and civil defense in the event of a nuclear emergency.
In 1972, the property was acquired by The Independent School District of Boise City and utilized for administrative purposes until it was repurchased in 2003 by Jon P. Farren. The building is now repurposed as an engineering office, indoor storage, and music rehearsal studios while retaining its historical significance within the community.
