The Pacific Islands Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (PI-GWEP) is a comprehensive and collaborative program located at the Department of Geriatric Medicine, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i. It aims to address the shortage of geriatrics-trained healthcare practitioners in the region by developing and implementing a culturally-relevant program of clinical training for a healthcare workforce that engages patients, families, and caregivers into an age dementia-friendly community.

Through active academic-community partnerships, PI-GWEP works with medical students, residents, fellows, and allied health fields to build a geriatric-capable medical workforce. The program also provides continuing education, ECHO and Grand Rounds, and collaborates with community partners to offer educational lectures and resources to local caregivers. With a focus on improving health outcomes for older adults, PI-GWEP strives to empower patients, families, and direct care workers with knowledge and skills for geriatric care, while promoting age- and dementia-friendly communities.
