The Saddle Road, also known as Daniel K. Inouye Highway, was initially constructed by the Department of the Army in 1942 to access military training facilities between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Over the years, while some improvements were made, many of the road's deficiencies remained unaddressed until the collaborative efforts of the Federal Highway Administration and the Hawaii Department of Transportation aimed to enhance its infrastructure.
The ongoing improvements on Saddle Road include significant upgrades to its alignment and paving, ensuring better access and safety for travelers. Current projects encompass various sections, including completed acquisitions and designs extending from Mamalahoa to the Queen Kaahumanu Highway and further along the route.
