Mauna Kea Observatories
The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) was established in 1967 at the University of Hawai'i to manage the Haleakal Observatories on Maui and the Mauna Kea Observatories on the Big Island. IfA conducts fundamental research on stars, planets, galaxies, and cosmology using ground-based telescopes and space observatories.
With a focus on solar physics, interstellar matter, and galaxy clustering, IfA's program includes academic programs in astronomy at both undergraduate and graduate levels, closely linked with the UH Mānoa Department of Physics and Astronomy. The state of Hawai'i has become a premier location for large ground-based telescopes, with IfA playing a pivotal role in the astronomical discoveries made over the past five decades.
