Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership
The Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership (LHWRP) is a coalition established in June 2003, comprised of 11 private and public landowners and supporting agencies dedicated to restoring dryland forests on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā, Maui. Spanning 43,175 acres, the partnership aims to enhance native biodiversity, protect cultural resources, and promote economic diversity through community engagement and volunteer efforts.
With less than 10% of historical forest cover remaining in the area, LHWRP addresses significant threats such as overgrazing, invasive species, and climate change impacts, including increased fire risk and declining groundwater levels. The coalition has successfully planted over 122,000 native seedlings and maintained 135 miles of fences to protect native ecosystems, demonstrating a commitment to reversing the loss of native forested lands.
