History

Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is a 704-acre refuge that was established in 1992 to provide sanctuary for two endangered Hawaiian waterbirds, the Hawaiian coot('alae ke'oke'o) and the Hawaiian stilt(ae'o). It is one of the few natural wetlands remaining in the Hawaiian Islands, and the largest lowland wetland in Maui.

I enjoy visiting this NWR every time I visit Maui. There are two sections. The coastal boardwalk is open every day and is a nice walk between the beach and coastal wetlands on a well maintained...

A stroll on the boardwalk. And access to the water at 3 points. Some bird life. Overcast and windy day.

Nice informative visiting center. Short drive to a relaxed walk around the ponds which house at least two endangered Hawaiian birds.

The boardwalk is very well maintained, and it connects few short routes to the long ranged beach. It's a very slow paced walk to observe wild birds and very few tourists.

(Late review from September - October 2022) Gorgeous, pleasant views of the beach and coastline. There is a boardwalk from a leisurely stroll here to enjoy and take in the view. Recommended stop...
