Billabong Koloa, located in the heart of Old Koloa Town, has its roots in the surf culture of Kauai, dating back to 1970 when founder Joe Kuala started Progressive Expressions. Over the years, the shop has evolved from making six surfboards at a time to becoming one of Kauai's better-known surf shops, aided by the craftsmanship of both Joe and his collaborator Bruce Pleas.
Initially situated a couple of doors down from its current location, Billabong Koloa has remained a staple in the community even after Joe and his wife Marty sold the shop. Tragically, Joe passed away in July 2011, but his legacy continues to live on through the surfboards crafted and the community spirit fostered at the shop.
