Riverside Cemetery was established in 1887 as a private cemetery located above the Ocmulgee River and has operated as a not-for-profit entity since the 1940's. The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the final resting place for more than 17, 000 people representing many ages, faiths, races, and national creeds. Many Civil War veterans from both sides are interred here on the more than 125 acres of beautifully landscaped property. Historically significant and beautifully maintained in all seasons, the cemetery continues to add new sections, making it a perfect choice as a final resting place for Macon families and others. Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy The Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy has been established to preserve, protect, educate, and help enrich the cemetery's relationship with its community. To cultivate this relationship and work toward its goals, the Conservancy partners with members of Macon and other surrounding communities to provide educational and volunteer opportunities that highlight the rich history and modern relevance of the cemetery. The Conservancy is a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) non-profit, and all donations are tax-deductible. Special Events at Riverside The Conservancy works directly with Riverside Cemetery to provide both entertaining and educational events and programs. This past October, the Conservancy partnered with Historic Macon and The Cox Capital Theatre to host Spirits in October, a series that included historic tours of the cemetery, Halloween themed movies, and ghost tours of downtown Macon. The tours of the cemetery included costumed actors portraying notable interments and receptions in the Macon Public Mausoleum. The Conservancy also partners with the College Hill Corridor Commission to host concerts and picnics in Riverside Cemetery's amphitheatre. Families and friends are invited to enjoy the serene landscape of the cemetery as they picnic and listen to the peaceful melodies of the featured entertainment- whether it be a jazz band or The Red Swill.

Tour this beautiful historic cemetery in Macon. The rolling, tree-filled grounds were designed by a business partner of Frederick Law Olmsted. The Ocmulgee trail runs through the cemetery, too.
