The Jail Dogs Program, also known as Operation Second Chance, is an innovative initiative launched in February 2010 that pairs the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office with the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia Inc. This unique program rescues dogs from local shelters; providing them with training through the involvement of inmates, who gain valuable skills and a sense of purpose in the process.
Since its inception, the program has successfully rescued, vetted, and adopted over 1,500 dogs and cats, while also fostering strong bonds between the incarcerated handlers and the animals. By enriching the lives of both the dogs and the inmates, the Jail Dogs Program creates a mutually beneficial environment that promotes healing, understanding, and compassion.
