History
In 1954, Dr. Robert Allen Clark, Jr., the first Neurosurgeon outside of the Atlanta area to become Board certified, established a small, neurosurgical practice on First Street in downtown Macon. The office grew steadily through the decades and officially became named Georgia Neurosurgical Institute in 1990. The practice, which offers expert, comprehensive treatment of the brain, neck, spine and peripheral nerves, is now located in the Professional Building of The Medical Center of Central Georgia, Navicent Health on the 8th floor. This move enabled GNI to create a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgery center where minimally invasive procedures can be performed thus allowing patients to forgo a hospital stay and return home shortly thereafter. Being connected to The Medical Center also means that GNI physicians are minutes away from the only Level One Trauma Center in this area of the state.
Specialties
Georgia Neurosurgical Institute physicians are the leaders in the treatment of neurological problems and diseases of the brain and spine. Using precision and advanced techniques -- some of which they have pioneered themselves -- GNI physicians strive to lessen pain, reduce risk, and decrease recovery time. GNI physicians hold 28 patents for medical devices and are in the forefront of surgical procedures, clinical trials, and medical research. They train other neurosurgeons worldwide, including those in underdeveloped countries where medical care is often scant or unavailable.
