Established in 1845, the Florida Attorney General's Office is responsible for the enforcement of state consumer protection and antitrust laws, as well as civil prosecution of criminal racketeering. It also represents the state when the convicts appeal convictions, including capital murder cases. The office additionally conducts various programs to assist local law enforcement agencies and crime victims. The Florida Attorney General's Office aids the pursuit of criminal activities, including identity theft, through the Office of Statewide Prosecution. In addition, it issues formal legal opinions at the request of various public officials on questions related to the application of state laws and defends the constitutionality of statutes duly enacted by the legislature. With an office in Orlando, Fla., the office serves on the Florida Cabinet as a trustee of public land.
