Melissa Lynn Crenshaw, MD

Dr. Ayala is the director of the Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Treatment Center at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. She also is the hematology leader of the Young Women Bleeding Disorders/Menorrhagia Clinic, which focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to bleeding symptoms in girls and young women. Dr. Ayala also is involved in the Immune Dysregulation Clinic, which evaluates patients with autoimmune cytopenias in a multidisciplinary approach. Dr. Ayala joined the hospital in 2000. She was the chair of the Division of Hematology/Oncology between 2013-2017 and also served as interim director for the division between 2015-2016. Dr. Ayala's research experience includes multicenter national and international projects. Dr. Ayala received her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, her residency training at the San Juan City Hospital in Puerto Rico and her fellowship training at the Emory University School of Medicine Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Ayala is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Research Society.

Dr. Kim is a physician in the Genetics Program at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and an assistant professor of genetic medicine in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He joined the medical staff in 2021 as the first board-certified medical biochemical geneticist at the hospital. He has a clinical and research interest in inborn errors of metabolism. Dr. Kim was honored as Best Consulting Physician at Johns Hopkins All Children's in the 2024 Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Awards. Dr. Kim earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. He completed his pediatrics residency at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as a part of the inaugural class of 2017. He then completed his medical genetics residency and fellowship, chief residency, and medical biochemical genetics fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Meral Gunay-Aygun is a professor of pediatrics and genetic medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Gunay-Aygun specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of children and adults with inherited metabolic diseases including diagnostic evaluation and follow-up of newborns with abnormal newborn screens for inherited metabolic diseases. After serving 14 years as an attending physician at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, she joined the medical staff of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2022.Dr. Gunay-Aygun earned her medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey. She completed pediatrics and medical genetics residencies at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and a biochemical genetics fellowship at the National Institutes of Health’s National Human Genome Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. She has made numerous research contributions, especially in the study of inherited ciliopathies, for which she has earned international recognition.Dr. Gunay-Aygun received the Innovative Leadership Award from Genetic Alliance, as well as the NHGRI Merit Award for her research on Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease/Congenital Hepatic Fibrosis.She is a member of myriad professional organizations, including the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society of Pediatric Research and the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders.
