Joel Calafell, M.D., is a general surgeon at Baptist Health Medical Group. Dr. Calafell specializes in colon and rectal surgery and has extensive training in robotic surgery. He was born and raised in Miami and is fluent in English and Spanish. Prior to joining Baptist Health Medical Group in 2021, Dr. Calafell was on staff at Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery. During his general surgery residency, Dr. Calafell was elected administrative chief resident and awarded the Golden Humanism Award (Best Resident Teacher). He was also elected president of the Student Government Association in medical school. His research has been published in the Annals of Emergency Surgery and the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. He also authored a chapter in the book “Seminars in CRS: Entering Practice in Colorectal Surgery.” Dr. Calafell believes every patient deserves the best care possible and treats each patient like family. His greatest joy is managing a patient through the entirety of their care and telling them they are cured. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Calafell enjoys cooking, exercising, watching sports and spending time with his family.

Arelis Mártir-Negrón, M.D., FAMG, is a medical geneticist at Miami Cancer Institute, a world-class cancer center, part of Baptist Health South Florida. Her teaching experience includes mentoring and instructing residents and fellows in the areas of cancer genetics and internal medicine genetics. She is a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. Dr. Mártir-Negrón received her medical degree from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine in Guadalajara, Mexico. She completed a residency in medical genetics and genomics at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Ala., and a residency in internal medicine at the Ponce School of Medicine, Ramon E. Betances Hospital-Mayaguez Medical Center in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She also completed a fellowship in cancer genetics at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif. Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute, Dr. Mártir-Negrón was an attending medical geneticist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
