Florida Institute For Saltwater Heritage
The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH) is a nonprofit grassroots organization established in 1991, dedicated to promoting, educating, and preserving the commercial fishing heritage and traditional maritime cultures of Cortez, Florida. Through community efforts, FISH has acquired and is restoring the FISH Preserve, a vital 100-acre undeveloped land adjacent to the fishing village, to protect the environment that supports these communities.
FISH also hosts the annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival, a two-day event that celebrates the area's fishing heritage with live music, arts and crafts, children's activities, and delicious seafood. Additionally, the organization offers boatbuilding, restoration, and repair services through its Boatworks program, where volunteers of varying skill levels can collaborate on maritime projects.
