Kara Cavuoto, MD, is the consummate example of an academician who has had an undeniable impact on ophthalmic clinical practice, research, and education. As medical director of the Emergency Department at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, one of the few U.S. eye hospitals with a specialized emergency department, Cavuoto demonstrated strength and leadership by ensuring 24-hour eye care is available, even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She also serves as the director of medical student education in which she guides the educational programs and career development of medical students. She has implemented novel learning options, lecture styles, and teaching opportunities to enrich the training of future generations.

Steven J Gedde, MD is Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice Chair of Education at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr Gedde completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident. He pursued a clinical glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr Gedde has lectured nationally and internationally. He has authored and co-authored more than 400 articles, book chapters, and abstracts.
