"OUTSTANDING! Period!" -Kandice Jeffrey B. Burnette, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, joins Hughston Orthopaedics, the newest satellite of Hughston Clinic in Fleming Island, FL. Dr. Burnette graduated from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, in 1989, and obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1993. He completed his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and from 1994 to 1996, was the General Medical Officer at the Pentagon Army Health Clinic. Dr. Burnette also did his surgical residency at Walter Reed, finishing in 2001. He then went on to complete a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at UCLA Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Burnette served as a staff orthopaedist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and then spent the following year as an orthopaedic surgeon in Iraq. Moreover, from 2005 to 2006, Dr. Burnette was Officer In-Charge of the Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic at WBAMC and, beginning in 2007, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Service. From 2008 to 2013, he practiced at Piedmont Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Complex. From 2011 to 2013, he was the Chief of Staff at Coliseum Northside Hospital, where he was also active as the Total Joint Program Champion and a member of the Board of Trustees at Coliseum Medical Centers. Additionally, in 2013-2014, he did a hip and knee total joint fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Since 2014, Dr. Burnette has practiced total joint surgery at First Coast Orthopaedics A Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedics Surgeons, Dr. Burnette belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Southern Orthopaedic Society, and the International Hip Arthroscopy Society. Dr. Keener is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and orthopaedic traumatologist. Dr. Keener attended the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine where she received the McCaughan Heritage Scholarship and graduated with honors. She then completed a rotating surgery internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She went on to complete an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at University of Alabama-Birmingham. Before coming to the Hughston Clinic, she joined the faculty of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, a level 1 trauma facility, as assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Keener is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics, American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and is on the faculty for AO Trauma. She has written several book chapters and published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Keener continues to teach courses in orthopaedic trauma and stays involved in clinical trial research. Her main area of interest is the surgical treatment of complex fractures. Dr. Keener's other areas of interest include distal humerus fractures, fixation of tibial plateau fractures, and pelvic and acetabular surgery.

After a distinguished 24-year career as a Navy orthopaedic surgeon, Mark T. Gould, MD, is joining the staff of the Hughston Clinic, in Jacksonville, FL. His clinical interest includes foot and ankle reconstructive surgery including total ankle arthroplasty and complex hind and midfoot reconstruction, sports related injuries of the lower extremity, general orthopaedics, and regenerative medicine applications to optimize recovery and functional outcomes. Dr. Gould graduated from Denison University in Granville, OH, with a Bachelor of Science degree and he went on to earn his medical degree at Wright State University, Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, OH. Dr. Gould completed his general surgery internship at Naval Hospital Bremerton Puget Sound Family Medicine before completing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. Between his internship and residency, Dr. Gould spent 4 years as an Undersea Medical Officer with Naval Special Warfare, providing care and advanced trauma training in austere tactical environments. He also had an active hyperbaric medicine practice. Additionally, he finished a one year fellowship in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at the University of Washington, Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Seattle under the guidance of Sigvard T. Hansen, MD, Bruce Sangeorzan, MD, and Steven Bernaske, MD. Dr. Gould was head of the Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery Division, Department of Orthopaedics, at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, and since 2008, he served at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery treating injuries of the foot and ankle. In 2006, he served a busy combat deployment as an orthopaedic surgeon in Al-Anbar Province, Iraq. A fellowship trained, board certified orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Gould has published peer-reviewed medical research articles and a book chapter in his subspecialty area of foot and ankle reconstruction. Dr. Gould participates in medical education Grand Rounds and conferences, presenting on foot and ankle, as well as blast trauma, and topics related to special operations medical demands.
