Derek Papp, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic sports medicine physician and orthopedic surgeon with Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery and the surgical treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders and knee ligamentous injuries. He has a specific interest in treating the shoulder and elbow of throwing athletes. He enjoys helping athletes face challenges presented by their sports and provides orthopedic care to athletes of all skill levels, including professional, collegiate, high school and recreational athletes. Dr. Papp is a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles and formerly served as head team physician for the Orioles’ minor league affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds. Dr. Papp has also served as a team physician for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Florida Panthers, Florida International University athletics and Miami-Dade County Public Schools athletics. On a fun note, Dr. Papp served as Major League Baseball’s venue physician in Miami and Taichung, Taiwan during the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) as well as in Seoul, Korea and Mexicali, Mexico during the 2017 WBC tournament and qualifier. Dr. Papp maintains his appointment as a part-time assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he provided clinical and surgical instruction to residents prior to joining Baptist Health. During his career, Dr. Papp has served as a course director at a multitude of international orthopedic educational conferences (including in Antarctica, scheduled to return in 2026), published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented many scientific papers at professional symposiums. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Major League Baseball Team Physicians’ Association, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America, where he serves on the Education Committee.

Her research has been published in several high-impact, peer-reviewed journals such as CHEST, JAMA Otolaryngology and Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. She serves on numerous local and national committees for sleep medicine. As chief of clinical transformation at Baptist Health, Dr. Walia continues to drive innovation and excellence in healthcare delivery. Her leadership is instrumental in implementing evidence-based practices and fostering a culture of continuous improvement to meet the evolving needs of patients and the community. She has also led multiple professional and leadership development initiatives. She has been recognized for her leadership and scholarly achievements, and received the prestigious Gidwani Mid-Career Scholarship from the Women’s Professional Staff Association at Cleveland Clinic in 2020. This scholarship facilitated her professional development at Harvard Medical School’s leadership course, where she honed her leadership skills and strategic vision in healthcare transformation.
