Since 1983, Big Bend Hospice, based in Tallahassee, Fla., has provided care for people living with a life-threatening illness. The hospice deals with the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual concerns of the patient and family and also offers palliative care to the patient. It provides each patient with a care team consisting of the patient's own doctor, a hospice nurse, home health aide, a family support counselor, chaplain and a specially trained volunteer. Care is provided in the patients own home, in a long-term care facility such as a nursing home or an assisted living facility or in the hospice house residence. Big Bend Hospice serves Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor and Wakulla counties in Florida. Its services are available 24-hours a day and seven-days a week.

Hospice offers support services to the family as well as the patient. Education and emotional support for the family members during the illness and bereavement support afterwards are an important part of the scope of hospice care.
