History

Chartered in June of 1968 through the efforts of the Mental Health Association of Charlotte County and Mrs. Leona Vrancken, CBHC began offering services in June of 1969. From 1969 to 1971 CBHC operated from an office on the second floor of the Charlotte County Courthouse. In 1971, CBHC moved to a house located at 112 Sullivan Street in Punta Gorda where it remained until 1987 when it moved to a location on El Jobean Road. In 1992, CBHC moved to its present location at 1700 Education Avenue. Dr. William (Bill) Wharton served as the founding Executive Director of CBHC from 1969 until his retirement in 1985. He was succeeded by Dr. Gerald (Jerry) N. Ross who served as Executive Director/CEO until his retirement in December 2005. Jay Glynn, LMHC, is currently Chief Executive Officer. On November 2, 2006, Charlotte Community Mental Health Services changed its name to Charlotte Behavioral Health Care to better reflect the additional programs and services it offers our community.
