As one of the largest hamburger restaurant chains, BURGER KING markets itself with the popular tagline, HAVE IT YOUR WAY. In 1954, James McLamore and David Edgerton opened the first BURGER KING restaurant and three years later introduced the original WHOPPER sandwich that became an instant sensation. Today, the BURGER KING system operates more than 11,000 restaurants throughout the United States and over 65 countries worldwide. Approximately 90 percent of BURGER KING restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, many of which are family-owned operations that have been in business for decades. Its restaurants serve a variety of food items that include flame-broiled burgers, onion rings, chicken sandwiches, desserts, salads and beverages. Its menu also features BK Stackers, BK VEGGIE burgers, BK JOE coffee, ICEE drinks and CHICK N CRISP sandwiches. The restaurants also sell a prepaid card, BK CROWN CARD, which allows its customers to spend up to the value loaded onto the card.
