The U.S. Maritime Administration, also known as MARAD, is an agency of the Department of Transportation and promotes the development and maintenance of the United States merchant marine that carries the United States domestic waterborne commerce and serves as a naval and military auxiliary in time of war and national emergency. MARAD also ensures the maintenance of adequate shipbuilding and repair services, efficient ports, intermodal water and land transportation systems and reserves shipping capacity for use in time of national emergency. It also offers a wide range of programs and services, national security, financial approvals and cargo preference, shipbuilding, port, intermodal, operations international and environmental activities, and training and educational programs. It is located in Washington, D.C. The Department of Transportation is a federal Cabinet department of the United States government concerned with transport.
