The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regulates and oversees energy industries in the economic, environmental and safety interests of the American public. It is an independent regulatory agency that oversees the interstate commerce of energy commodities, including sales and transmission of natural gas, pipeline transmission of oil and wholesale sales and transmission of electricity. Located in Washington, D.C., the commission is also responsible for licensing hydroelectric power projects, approving sites for natural gas facilities and providing environmental analysis relating to such projects. Additionally, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is responsible for oversight of the financial conduct of regulated energy companies, as well as promoting open-market competition.
