Devereux traces its roots back to 1912 when a Philadelphia teacher took an interest in youngsters considered slow by most of her colleagues. Through the Devereux Foundation, Helena T. Devereux thought students could learn in an environment tailored to their needs. So she took three students into her parent s home, where they learned the to read write and perform arithmetic, they also acquired daily living skills. After her success with these youngsters, she borrowed $500 and began her first residential treatment program in Devon, Pa.
