The Dover Gas Light Company, established in 1859, eventually became Chesapeake Utilities Corporation, even though the company was not officially incorporated in the state of Delaware until nearly 90 years later in 1947. The very next year, the company acquired two smaller gas companies, one in Seaford, Del., and the other in nearby Salisbury, Md. Tidewater Utilities, established in 1964, supplies water on a retail basis to more than 30,000 customers in over 400 residential communities throughout Delaware. The company operates nearly 80 water plants and approximately 150 wells. Its subsidiary, Tidewater Environmental Services, offers a range of water and wastewater services, including consulting, maintenance and bulk water supply. Tidewater Utilities also provides online bill payment options. The company offers fire protection services. It issues an annual water quality report. In addition, the company operates White Marsh Environmental Systems. It regularly tests water for more than 100 contaminants. Tidewater Utilities is a part of Middlesex Water Company, which was founded in 1897.
