West Elementary School is a learning center that is a part of New Canaan Public Schools. The school serves more than 530 students in prekindergarten through grade four. It offers English for Speakers of Other Languages and special education programs. The school s general academic curriculum includes language arts, math, science and technology education. It also supports activities, such as art, music and physical education. West Elementary School operates a parent-teacher council that sponsors several school programs and activities. The school organizes events, such as talent shows, student socials, and math and technology nights. It also offers a range of after-school programs that include instruction in piano and string instrument playing and chess and newspaper clubs. New Canaan Country School is an independent school for beginners through grade nine. It was founded as the Community School in 1916. The school has an enrollment of more than 600 students and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1. It provides students and teachers access to educational resources and facilities, including online libraries, an audiovisual center and multimedia laboratory, art studios, music classrooms, a fully equipped wood-working shop, modern science labs, a professional auditorium, gymnasiums, playing fields and a nature center. It offers classes in English, art, science, language arts, literature, math, cooking and social studies. Its academic program is supplemented by offerings in art, music, singing, dramatics, creative dance, woodworking, computers and daily athletics. The school was recognized by the Department of Education as a national exemplary Blue Ribbon school for excellence in education.
