If these walls could talk, they might tell tales as told by novelist and best-seller Ann Lane Petry whose African-American parents were the original owners of this historic site. You might hear starstruck whispers about Academy-award winning actress Katharine Hepburn who visited often. You might overhear the sage advice of Miss Anna James, the first African-American female pharmacist in Connecticut who ran the beloved pharmacy for 55 years. Today this historic building has been lovingly renovated, with three guest rooms upstairs. All rooms feature a gas fireplace and a queen-sized bed with Stearns and Foster handmade mattress. Right downstairs you’ll find Cocotte, a French Fusion restaurant offering handcrafted croissants, brioches, muffins, and scones baked fresh daily, as well as artisanal gelato, Wednesday through Sunday. Brunch is served Thursday through Sunday, when Chef Jeff blends the finesse of French cooking with the savors, spices and herbs inherited from France’s colonial history. On offer are quiches, soups, omelettes, as well as prix fixe and specials. Visit Cocotte’s Épicerie for wonderfully curated French and creole products. Take a scenic stroll along the water past the historic homes and scenic views of North and South Cove, Saybrook Point, and Fenwick. Watch the sunset over the ocean or take a walk at Fort Saybrook Monument Park or out to one of Old Saybrook’s lighthouses. It’s a beautiful area for walking, bicycling, canoeing, antiquing or scenic drives along the Ct River and Long Island Sound. One mile to Island Sound beaches and Connecticut River Cruises. You’ll be steps away from the shops of downtown Old Saybrook, and the home of The Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. From blues, to modern indie pop, to the Metropolitan Opera performances in HD, the Kate offers a diverse mix of performing arts.
