Buckskin Booksellers was begun by P. David and Jan Smith who ran the store until Nov. of 2001, when they sold it to Caroline and Robert Stoufer of Ouray. Caroline ran the store until her treatment for cancer in 2007 made it too difficult. Robert, who had owned The Sandman shop in Ouray since 2009, then closed The Sandman and took over day to day operations of the bookstore. Robert continues to operate the store today.
Buckskin Booksellers has the region's best selection of local history and guidebooks, local hiking and 4-wheel drive maps, large selections in geology, mining, women of the west, native America, and western history. Also ABA bestsellers, childrens' books, notecards, journals, and mining and railroad antiques. We also have a selection of Colorado mineral specimens, most from the San Juan Mountains.
