A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nelson Alston has devoted his entire legal career to the field of civil rights. As a young law student, Alston was drawn to the civil rights movement and to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He believed that the American dream could only be realized with solid gainful employment. The rights to public accommodations and the rights to equal housing have little value to individuals who cannot afford to go to a restaurants, who cannot afford to pay reasonable rents, or who cannot afford to buy homes. Believing that no one should be denied the right to achieve economic success because of employment discrimination, Alston has spent the past twenty-five years litigating cases under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
