The Whittier Area Literacy Council (WALC) is a non-profit volunteer organization that has been serving Whittier and adjacent communities since 1962. Their mission is to build a stronger, more literate community by providing free individualized tutoring in basic literacy and English as a Second Language for children and adults.
WALC trains community volunteers and pairs them with students, using a variety of methods and materials to meet the learning goals of their students. They are funded by grants, personal donations, the City of Whittier, fundraisers, membership dues, and local service organizations.
