Western Canal Water District
The Western Canal Water District, formed on December 18, 1984, as a California Water District, encompasses approximately 67,500 acres, with around 59,000 acres deemed irrigable. The district acquired the Western Canal water system from Pacific Gas and Electric Company, which had previously obtained it from the Great Western Power Company, and has been operational since 1911.
The district's water supply is derived from the Feather River and includes pre-1914 surface water rights, with a total entitlement of 150,000 acre-feet of natural flow, subject to drought reductions. Additionally, the district holds an adjudicated water right on Butte Creek, allowing for a maximum diversion of 9,300 acre-feet, contingent on surplus availability.
