History

The non-profit American Cinematheque was conceived as a year round film festival by Gary Essert and Gary Abrahams who also founded the legendary Los Angeles Film Festival FILMEX (1971 - 1982). The American Cinematheque bought the 1922 Egyptian Theatre from the City of Los Angeles for $1 with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated. Following a $15 million renovation, restoration and adaptive re-use under federal guidelines for historic restoration, the Egyptian Theatre re-opened on December 4, 1998 with a 75th anniversary premiere of
