Index Fresh began in 1914 as Index Orchards with the goal of packing and marketing lemons and oranges from Orange County, California. Initially formed as a grower owned corporation, Index became a cooperative in 1929 under the name of Index Mutual Association. Citrus was the primary product until the 1950 s when avocados were introduced into the product line with the absorption of sister cooperative, United Avocado Growers. As the avocado industry began to flourish, avocados replaced citrus as Index s primary product in the 1960 s and 1970 s.
