History

The SF Open Studios program began in 1975 by a small group of enterprising artists who wanted to make their artwork accessible to the public. These artists decided to open their studios concurrently on one weekend to encourage collectors to visit artists' workspaces and see where art is made. ArtSpan was created as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation in 1991 to secure the longevity and consistency of the SF Open Studios program, while creating additional programming for the community, youth, and families. 2015 marks the 40th Anniversary of SF Open Studios. SF Open Studios is a San Francisco tradition and offers an inclusive art experience by providing hundreds of local artists with the equal opportunity to showcase their work and make direct connections to diverse audiences and patrons.

Specialties

SF Open Studios is the oldest and largest open studios program in the country, featuring an annual, month-long art event in October and November that showcases over 800 emerging and established San Francisco artists in their studios. 2015 marks the 40th Anniversary of SF Open Studios! Each weekend, art patrons, admirers, and collectors venture out on self-guided tours to see as many SF Open Studios artists and their artworks as possible, in the hopes of finding their next true art love. The event connects collectors with artists for engaging dialogue and a glimpse into the life of the working artist; SF Open Studios simultaneously helps artists build their mailing lists, gain new admirers, and ultimately sustain a living making art.

I attended Open Studios on Sunday 10/3 at 1890 Bryant. I arrived at 11 AM. They did not open until noon; lazy artists. I got stung for $5 for an iced late at Starbucks, across the street. No...

Great effing idea. If you don't lean toward a specific style of art, and you've already "been there, done that" with all the local museums, the open galleries are the way to go to be exposed to...
