Located in San Mateo, Calif., the Samaritan House is a nonprofit health and human service agency that serves more than 12,000 low-income individuals. The organization has over 2,000 volunteers who provide food, clothing, shelter, health care, worker resources and counseling services. It is a community-supported organization that receives funds from private groups and individual donations. The Samaritan House features Safe Harbor, a 90-bed shelter that offers job services and substance abuse counseling for men and women. The organization assists the homeless in rebuilding their lives, achieving self-sufficiency and reestablishing family relationships. Established in 1974, its food program provides nutritional assistance to about 2,000 individuals. The Samaritan House receives food donations from grocery stores, Project Wee Care and the Second Harvest food bank.
