Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 by Dr. Birut Mary Galdikas, dedicated to the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rainforest habitat in Borneo. They work in cooperation with the Indonesian government and local communities to expand national parks, establish reserves, and safeguard land, while also rescuing, rehabilitating, and repatriating ex-captive orangutans for release back into the wild. With a focus on habitat protection, acquisition, and restoration, as well as conservation outreach, education, and scientific research, OFI has played a crucial role in saving hundreds of captive and orphaned orangutans and protecting 1.5 million acres of rainforest habitat.
Through their Foster Parent Program, OFI provides medical, dietary, and emotional care to displaced and orphaned orangutans at their Care Centre and Quarantine facility, helping them rehabilitate and thrive. By becoming an Orangutan Foster Parent, individuals can contribute to this cause and receive a tax-deductible foster purchase. With a strong commitment to raising awareness about the plight of orangutans and other wildlife species, OFI engages in local and global outreach and education programs, aiming to create permanently-protected orangutan habitat and ensure the survival of these incredible creatures for generations to come.
