Lake Merritt is an iconic Oakland staple. It's a lovely place to walk around. The whole loop takes me a little over an hour. There are plenty of interesting birds to see along the way....

Considered Oakland's crown jewel, Lake Merritt is one of the largest urban fresh and saltwater lakes in the United States. It's also home to the oldest designated wildlife refuge in the U.S. Although the lake attracts thousands of migratory birds, it also attracts a wide cross-section of Oakland residents. From early in the morning to evening, when lights illuminate its 3.4-mile circumference, folks of all ages walk, run and rollerblade around the paved paths. The lake offers a bonsai garden, boathouses, a nature center and lawn bowling, and remains a popular gathering space for Oakland's active community.
