The Albany Bulb, also known as The Bulb, is a former landfill located in Albany, California. It is a peninsula that extends into the San Francisco Bay and is owned by the City of Albany. The Bulb is a popular outdoor recreation site and is known for its landmarks, including Mary's Mask, Gritchell's Bay, and Mad Marc's Castle. The development of the Bulb began in 1939 when the Santa Fe Railroad dynamited a hill to build Golden Gate Fields race track, pushing the debris into the Bay to create parking lots. Over the years, the peninsula was gradually filled with construction debris such as concrete and rebar. Efforts to halt the dumping and preserve the area were successful in the 1980s, and the Bulb is now part of The Eastshore State Park.
