Defining Artists was launched in late 2002. Having developed the Bobby Ball TV/Film Department to its full potential, Kim Dorr felt the time was right to "re-brand" this department and create a new identity. "When a TV/Film Department grows out of the soil of an agency known primarily for commercials, as Bobby Ball Agency is, it can be difficult to be taken seriously among the rank and file of well-known theatrical boutiques. We had extremely competitive talent on our client list. We had the experience and industry relationships in our staff. What we needed was a farther horizon." Keeping the continuity of its client list and staff, the Bobby Ball Theatrical Department was seperately franchised in 2002 and became Defining ArtistsIn contradistinction to the "big" agencies, Defining Artists prides itself in its one-on-one relationship with each of its clients. "Power comes in many packages, " say Dede Binder-Goldsmith, who joined Defining Artists, as partner, in June of 2004. "Our power and influence rests in how well we know our talent, and how well the buyers in town know us. For years, Kim and I have put our money where our mouth is. We've developed relationships built on truth and integrity, not smoke and mirrors. We're proud of who we are, what we do, and how we do it."In its inaugural pilot season, Defining Artists placed series regulars on Nip Tuck and the short-lived Fox drama series, Skin. A particular niche for Defining Artists is in finding and developing new talent. Jessica Alba, D.J. Cotrona, Farah Fath and America Ferrera all received their first SAG jobs as well as their first "big break" through Kim's representation of their careers. Similarily, Defining Artists has enjoyed great success in taking established talent to the next level and in re-launching careers that Binder-Goldsmith has successfully established. "The work we do is sometimes laborious, " says Binder- Goldsmith. "We have to dig in and fight for our talent, but isn't that what it's all about?"
