While specializing in automotive electrical systems, Keith's Automotive has a special passion for classic and custom vehicles. Keith Heckman started Keith's Automotive Electric in 1978 as a mobile service specializing in service and repair of charging systems and electrical wiring for all makes of automobiles and heavy equipment, including tractors and earth moving equipment. His customers were mostly other repair shops and fleets, including the fire departments of Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Del Mar as well as fleets like Hubbard Contractors, San Dieguito Water District, and El Camino Rental. Referrals from other garages caused an expanded customer base and Keith's reputation grew. In 1980 Keith opened a repair shop in Del Mar, continuing to specialize in automotive electrics which included high quality rebuilt alternators and starters for all makes and models of trucks and automobiles. His business expanded to include wiring antique and classic cars. He helped build, sponsor, and work on the pit crew for two professional race cars. Keith's reputation was growing rapidly and in 1984 he moved to Solana Beach. In 1995 Keith's son, Eric, joined the team and now serves as lead mechanic and service advisor. In 1998 Keith's daughter, Kendra, joined the company in the bookkeeping department. In 2003 he expanded to the current location in Encinitas. The shop now performs complete service on everything from classic car restorations to modern hybrid automobile repairs. Electrical systems in automobiles have evolved and become more complex, so Keith and his team continue to attend training to stay at the forefront. Electronic ignition, electronic fuel injection, automatic electronic climate controls, electronically controlled transmissions, and anti-lock braking systems are here to stay. As the electronics have evolved in today's automobile, so have the services offered at Keith's Automotive to include everything from diagnosis of complex computer controlled circuits to oil changes, brakes, air conditioning and general maintenance.
