Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe

History

Here on the banks of the Rio Hondo, the last armed conflict was staged with Mexico for possession of California at the Battle of the Rio San Gabriel on January 8, 1847. The Adobe was built about one mile from the site of the first San Gabriel Mission and was part of the 2,363-acre Rancho La Merced.

Specialties

We are a historical site and museum. As the oldest residence in Montebello we have an obligation to preserve and share the rich local history. We celebrate our American Heritage by including the experience of the Gabrieleno Indian, Spanish, and the first Californios who called this land their home.
