Dr. Joseph C. Carmichael is a board-certified UCI Health colorectal surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical approaches to treating diseases of the colon and rectum. Carmichael started the first robot-assisted rectal surgery program in the state of Missouri and went on to perform the first robot-assisted rectal cancer resection in Orange County after joining UCI Medical Center. His clinical and research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and anorectal disease. He serves as chief medical officer for UCI Health and leads the UCI School of Medicine's Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He also is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and participates on numerous national committees. Carmichael earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the UCI School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital and University of Illinois, Chicago Medical Center.

He is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Surgical Association. In 2002, he received the Golden Scope Young Researcher Award from SAGES, in recognition of significant contribution to research in laparoscopic surgery. He is also past president of the ASMBS and served as the ASMBS representative on the Gastrointestinal Surgery Advisory Council for the American Board of Surgery. He is a former president of the North American Chapter of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Surgical Endoscopy and Annals of Surgery. He has been the principal investigator on numerous research grants and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
