History
THE iLL-LiTERATE'S ACADEMY, although established in 2015, was developed about 4 years prior when founder Michael Ja'Rey, then employed as a Trauma Informed Care trained Intervention Specialist at Oakland's YOUTH ALIVE, began working directly with incarcerated youth of color. After 4 years of employment within a hostile environment, under system structured conditions with adverse impacts on the developmental growth required for circumstantially traumatized black boys, Michael took an 18-month hiatus from the workforce to begin formatting THE iLL-LiTERATE'S ACADEMY. This hiatus proved necessary as it has allowed Michael to consolidate 8 years of trainings and experience into a design flexible enough to meet the needs of both children and parents alike.
